The Ohio State University Alumni Association has honored Southern Arizona Club Member Dr. Patricia Gilbert with its prestigious “Best Buckeye” Award. The announcement was made on September 23, 2011 at the Alumni Leaders’ Conference in Columbus.
Pat Gilbert has exemplified the University’s motto “Education for Citizenship” by her lifetime of service to humanity and community in the following ways:
1994-2011—Pat spearheaded and chaired our alumni club’s Teacher of the Year for Excellence in Education Committee for 17 years. This is an annual award given to a deserving Southern Arizona high school teacher. Pat’s dedication has inspired several Club Members to travel to all but two high schools in Southern Arizona to solicit nominations from the school principals.
During this same time period, Pat served on many boards and committees, including Stewardship and Personnel for the Rincon United Church of Christ in Tucson.
1997—Pat co-chaired, wrote, and carried out an AAUW (American Association of University Women) Community Action Grant to present a library kit of books and videos focused on improving equality of education for females in all middle and high schools in the Tucson Unified School District. They presented a workshop for representatives of all those schools.
1987—As AAUW Branch President in Fairborn, Ohio, Pat organized a group who wrote the History of Greene County, Ohio and made a video distributed to elementary schools in the county.
1972-76—As Secondary School Supervisor of Clark County, Ohio, Pat promoted “Right-to-Read” projects, where she met Archie Griffin, when he visited schools in her district.
As Sunday School Superintendent for the United Church of Christ in Fairborn, Ohio, Pat reformed the Women’s Group into community action groups who sponsored local Food for the Homeless projects.
Dr. Gilbert received her PhD in Curriculum and Supervision from OSU in 1980. Her undergraduate Bachelor of Arts Degree is from Miami of Ohio in 1967, and her Master of Arts Degree is from Wright State University in 1972. Pat was a Professor at Wright State for 12 years before retiring and moving to Tucson in 1993.
“Best Buckeye” Award winners have met five goals—leadership and service to Ohio State, initiatives created under this alumnus/alumna leadership, actions taken above and beyond their duties as an officer, contributions made to the Alumni Club, and civic involvement.
Congratulations Pat Gilbert on your well-deserved “Best Buckeye” Award. Your leadership in so many worthy causes sets a high bar for all of us. You make our University, our Alumni Association, and our Club proud!
